Grid protectors deter the squirrels by having a mesh over the seeds so that only the beaks of the birds can fit through. Its a design that works, but like others, not perfect. Squirrels can get around this by putting their weight on one side of the bird feeder so it tilts over. The seeds then spill to one side where the squirrel can reach them.
Other downsides are that they can only use certain type of seeds or it will clog the mesh. Also, they do not hold as much seeds as other feeders so it requires more work to fill it up.
