These squirrel deterrent bird feeders have a pressure sensitive perch that block the feeding area when too much weight is detected. You are able to adjust the tension in the feeder to accommodate different weights. You have to consider that it may also keep away larger birds and will block the seeds it too many small birds are feeding at the same time. For the most part it works pretty well but it is not fool proof.
In some cases grime and dirt buildup can make the panels stuck and harder to close. Some squirrels can also hang from the top of the bird feeder so the blocker doesn't close. Also squirrels can eventually learn to bypass the deterrent as customers have claimed that their squirrels open and close the panels causing the seeds to spill out.
Usually, it works, but it is not the perfect squirrel proof feeder.
This type of blocker is long there is no place for the squirrel to hang on to expect the perch. Once the squirrel is on the perch it closes the seed holes shut from the weight. The downside is that it is designed only for small birds. This one shown is the Brome 1024 Squirrel Buster Plus. |
